Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 31 suspected internet fraudsters during a sting operation at a facility described as an “internet fraud academy” in Becki Estate, Karu, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The suspects, said to include two alleged kingpins and several trainees, were apprehended on Thursday, April 9, 2026, while reportedly undergoing tutorials in cyber fraud.
Items recovered during the operation include mobile phones, 18 laptop computers, and other electronic gadgets believed to have been used in the illicit activities.
Preliminary investigations by the anti-graft agency revealed that some of the trainees were allegedly lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate job opportunities. However, upon arrival at the facility, they were reportedly provided with communication devices, computers, and software, and subsequently trained in internet fraud.
The EFCC further disclosed that the recruits were housed within the premises under strict conditions, with their movement restricted and their mobile phones confiscated, effectively cutting them off from the outside world.
According to the commission, reports also indicate that corporal punishment and physical assault were allegedly used to enforce discipline and compliance among the trainees.
The EFCC stated that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.
