The Federal Government has intensified efforts to reduce transportation costs and improve logistics nationwide through a strategic partnership with Admiralty Maritime Services Limited, aimed at expanding the use of inland and coastal waterways for cargo and passenger movement.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Fatima Sugra Tabi’a Mahmood, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Muhsin Abba, in Abuja.
Mahmood stated that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy to harness Nigeria’s vast aquatic resources as a cost-effective alternative to road and rail transportation.
She explained that since assuming office about ten weeks ago, her priority has been to accelerate the shift of freight movement from roads to waterways.
According to her, data shows that water transportation is significantly cheaper than other modes, adding that increasing its adoption would help lower the cost of goods and services while enhancing the competitiveness of the Nigerian economy.
The Permanent Secretary noted that the ministry is working under the policy direction of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, to actualize the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of positioning Nigeria as a global maritime leader.
She also highlighted Nigeria’s achievement in maintaining piracy-free territorial waters over the past three years but stressed the need for sustained collaboration with regional and international partners to secure shipping routes in the Gulf of Guinea.
Earlier, Rear Admiral Abba said Admiralty Maritime Services Limited, a subsidiary of Navy Holdings Limited, is ready to support the government’s blue economy roadmap.
He identified key operational challenges affecting Nigeria’s maritime gateways in Lagos, Warri, Calabar, and Port Harcourt, including the presence of underwater wrecks and the need for strategic dredging.
Abba noted that addressing these issues would improve navigational safety, boost vessel traffic, and enhance the efficient movement of petroleum products and other essential cargo along coastal routes.
He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to aligning with government policies to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The partnership is expected to play a crucial role in reducing logistics costs, easing pressure on road infrastructure, and strengthening the country’s blue economy.
