Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has donated 45 refurbished optical microscopes to eight secondary schools in Zaria as part of efforts to strengthen science education and practical learning.
The microscopes were refurbished by the university’s Equipment Maintenance and Development Centre (EMDC) and presented to the beneficiary schools at a ceremony held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the EMDC near ABU FM Radio, Samaru, Zaria.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, presented the items to the beneficiaries at the ceremony.
ABU Demonstration Secondary School received 10 microscopes, while seven other schools received five each. The beneficiary schools include Government Secondary School (GSS), Bomo; GSS Basawa; Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Samaru; GSS Jama’a; GSS Palladan; GSS Kwangila; and Judy Schools, Hanwa Low Cost.
In addition to the microscopes, the EMDC refurbished five laboratory facilities which were donated to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) and the University Health Services (UHS).
The items presented to ABUTH included a double Jouan Thermoelectron Corporation refrigerator, two giant sample refrigerators and a Memmert oven.
The University Health Services received a refurbished blood bank refrigerator and a centrifuge.
The university also handed over seven repaired and refurbished electric patrol bikes to the University Security Division to support its security operations.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor commended the Director of EMDC, Dr Abdulsalam Galadima, and staff of the centre for their commitment to repairing and refurbishing equipment for reuse.
Prof. Ahmed urged other units of the university to emulate the centre’s efforts and explore innovative ways of maintaining and maximising available resources.
Earlier, the Director of EMDC, Dr Abdulsalam Galadima, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his support towards the development and success of the centre.
The University Chief Security Officer, Malam Ashiru T. Zango, also thanked the university management for supporting the Security Division, noting that the division was responsible for protecting lives and property and maintaining peaceful coexistence within the university community.
The Principal of ABU Demonstration Secondary School, Dr Abdulkarim Adamu Biu, and the Proprietress of Judy Schools, Hanwa Low Cost, Mrs Mary Judy Okeh, appreciated the university for the donation.
They described the gesture as timely and assured the university that the equipment would be put to proper use for the benefit of students and the schools.
