Ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced its decision to discontinue operations in Nigeria after 12 years of providing transportation services in the country.
The company said its Nigerian operations would cease on September 2, 2026, as part of a broader review of its business priorities and investment strategy.
According to Uber, the decision is aimed at refocusing its investments on markets where it can create earning opportunities for drivers at scale while providing seamless transportation services for riders.
Uber commenced operations in Nigeria in 2014, beginning in Lagos before expanding its services to other major cities across the country.
The company’s exit is expected to affect thousands of drivers who depend on the platform for their livelihoods, as well as riders who have relied on Uber for convenient and accessible transportation.
Uber’s departure marks the end of more than a decade of operations in one of Africa’s largest and most populous markets, where ride-hailing services have become an important part of urban transportation.
The company has not indicated whether the decision represents a permanent withdrawal from the Nigerian market or whether it may reconsider its operations in the future.
