From Financial Struggles to Joy: How Kano’s Mass Wedding Changed 1,500 Lives

For some, a wedding is the celebration of love. For others, it is the beginning of a new life made possible by an opportunity they could hardly afford on their own.

In Kano State, the Auren Gata Mass Wedding Programme is providing such an opportunity for hundreds of couples who had struggled with the financial burden of marriage.

At the recent reception and distribution of furniture and other support items to 1,500 newly wedded couples, the atmosphere was not just one of celebration.

It was also a reflection of dreams delayed, families rebuilt and new beginnings made possible through government intervention.

For beneficiaries such as Haruna Bashir, the occasion carried a particularly deep meaning.

According to Bashir, the Kano State Government has fulfilled promises made to him, including support for a house, a Hajj seat and wedding expenses, following the death of his wife and six children.

Now beginning a new chapter with his new bride, Bashir expressed gratitude and joy over the opportunity to rebuild his life.

His story reflects the human dimension of a programme that has, over the years, brought together people whose desire to marry was often constrained by financial difficulties.

For Amina Aminu and Aliyu Ibrahim, the mass wedding turned what had remained a dream for four years into reality.

The young couple had been together for four years but could not formalise their relationship because of financial constraints.

Their participation in the Auren Gata programme changed that.

With the support provided by the Kano State Government, the couple was finally able to begin their matrimonial journey.

They described the intervention as one they would forever cherish, expressing appreciation to the government for coming to their aid at a time they needed it most.

Their experience is shared by other beneficiaries who say the programme has helped remove one of the major barriers confronting people who want to establish families but cannot afford the increasing cost of marriage.

The Kano mass wedding programme was initiated in 2011 as a social welfare initiative coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board.

It was designed to assist low-income spinsters, widows and divorcees who face financial difficulties associated with marriage.

300 Couples Tie the Knot as Kebbi Expands Annual Mass Wedding

Beyond helping couples get married, the programme seeks to contribute to family stability, reduce the social and economic pressures that can affect marriages and ultimately support societal development across Kano State’s 44 Local Government Areas.

The programme also goes beyond the wedding ceremony.

Prospective couples undergo medical screening and marriage counselling, while the Kano State Hisbah Board organises workshops and seminars to prepare them for the responsibilities that come with married life.

For the Kano State Government, the objective is not merely to organise weddings but to provide the couples with a foundation upon which they can build stable homes.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the Auren Gata programme was one of the key promises made by his administration during its campaign across the state ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Speaking at the reception for the 1,500 couples, Governor Yusuf urged the newlyweds to be patient with one another, uphold justice and fairness, respect each other and live together in peace, harmony and mutual understanding.

He reminded them that marriage is an act of worship and encouraged them to conduct their matrimonial lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Noble Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

The Governor stressed that patience and tolerance are essential ingredients for sustaining successful marriages.

The state government has committed more than N1.5 billion to the implementation of the programme and support for the beneficiaries.

According to Governor Yusuf, the expenditure included medical screening for the brides and grooms to safeguard their health and that of their future children.

Each couple also received N100,000 as dowry and another N100,000 capital grant intended to provide seed capital for starting a business and promoting self-reliance.

The government also distributed household furniture and essential items, including beds and mattresses, while food and other commodities were provided to cushion the economic challenges that could confront the couples during the early stages of marriage.

For beneficiaries already facing economic hardship, such assistance could mean the difference between starting married life under severe financial pressure and having some basic support to begin building a household.

Perhaps one of the most touching moments came when five beneficiaries of the 2024 mass wedding programme returned to the reception venue with their children.

The sight provided a glimpse into what the programme could mean beyond the wedding day.

The children, who came with their parents, attracted the attention of Governor Yusuf, who took turns holding and interacting with the young ones.

For those present, the moment offered a powerful reminder that mass weddings are not simply about bringing couples together. They can also mark the beginning of families whose children become part of the long-term story of the initiative.

Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Dr Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said the mass wedding initiative had gained wide recognition within and outside Nigeria.

He explained that the programme was designed to support couples financially while also preparing them for the responsibilities and challenges of married life.

The combination of financial assistance, medical screening, counselling and household support gives the programme a broader social-welfare character.

For the beneficiaries, the value of the programme goes beyond the financial support they received.

Haruna Bashir, Muhammad Tahir, Amina Aminu and Aliyu Ibrahim commended the Kano State Government for coming to their aid and described the initiative as a major catalyst for societal development.

They appealed to the government to sustain and expand the programme so that more couples facing financial difficulties can benefit.

As the celebrations end and the couples return to their homes, the real journey begins.

For some, it is a journey that follows years of waiting.

For others, it is a second chance at family life.

And for couples like Amina and Aliyu, it is the fulfilment of a four-year dream.

The furniture, financial support and food items may help them start their homes, but their stories suggest that the most important gift of the Auren Gata programme may be the opportunity to begin a family life that once seemed financially out of reach.
