The Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s professional advancement and greater inclusion in the accounting sector.
The Executive Chairman of KIRS, Alhaji Bashir Maitama, FCTI, CNA, NIM, stated this while receiving members of the Society of Women Accountants in Nigeria (SWAN), Kano Chapter, during a courtesy visit to the Service.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson of SWAN, Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim Audu, said the association was committed to promoting the professional development of female accountants, with mentorship of the girl-child forming a key part of its efforts.
She also highlighted the Accounting Technicians Scheme, describing it as a “catch-them-young” initiative aimed at encouraging young people to pursue careers in accounting, while noting that women remain a priority under the programme.
Hajiya Aisha further disclosed plans for a financial literacy programme targeting women-led businesses with an annual turnover of ₦1 million.
She explained that the programme would educate participants on tax compliance and proper financial record-keeping, and appealed to KIRS to support the initiative by providing tax facilitators for the proposed training sessions.
Responding, the KIRS Executive Chairman expressed appreciation to the association for the visit and commended the growing number of women becoming chartered accountants, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
Alhaji Maitama also expressed delight at the increasing number of women establishing and managing audit firms, describing the development as a positive step for the accounting profession.
He assured SWAN of KIRS’s readiness to collaborate with the association and provide the necessary support towards achieving its objectives.
The Chairman stressed that professional success is driven by interest, determination and commitment rather than gender, urging women to pursue their professional aspirations with confidence.
He further called for continued support and encouragement for women seeking to advance their careers in accounting and related professional fields.
