The Kano state government government with support from FCDO PLANE has organized an event to celebrate the international day to protect education from attack.

The occasion was also used to inaugurate the technical working group on school safety and security TWGSSS and establishment of school safety security response teams in Minjibir, Gabasawa, Takai and Karaye LGAs.

Declaring the event open Kano commissioner for education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa said the government has put modalities in place to ensure safety in schools where learning continues without fear of Intimidation.

According to him, the issue of safety is paramount to the lives of children in Kano hence the need to inaugurate the TWGSSS in Minjibir, Gabasawa, Takai and Karaye.

He highlighted that Kano has over ten thousand day and boarding schools with about 10 million students, saying that to effectively monitor them requires the participation of parents and relevant stakeholders.

Doguwa stressed that the state government has set up the school safety response teams SSRTs as directed by the federal government to protect students against all forms of oppression.

PLANE program facilitator Umma Muhammad enumerated the objectives of the workshop including disseminating findings from the schools safety and security assessment, to present the safe guarding IEC materials and school safety guarding referral pathway.

She highlighted that, the pilot TWGSSS was inagurated in Minjibir Gabasawa Takai and Karaye and would be extended to others to cover the state’s 44 LGAs.

In her presentation titled dissemination of findings from the school safety and security assessment, Dr Suwaiba Ahmed Sa’id recommended the domestication of the national school safety policy and its implementation.

As well as community sensitization and campaigns to foster partnerships and create opportunities for stakeholders to contribute to school safety and well-being.

FCDO/PLANE also used the opportunity to present the Safeguarding IE materials and School Safeguarding Referral Pathway to the State as the domestication of the SSS Policy will commence within the week

The event attracted representatives from SUBEB, SBMC, K-SAFE, Nigerian Police Force, NSCDC, Private and Voluntary institutions, ministry of women affairs, SEMA, media and all relevant stakeholders in the education sector.
