The Kano State Government says it has taken a significant step towards enhancing the gene pool of wild animals at the Kano Zoological Garden.

According to Sadik Kura Muhammad, Managing Director of the Kano Zoological Garden and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA), the garden has recently received a new stock of wild animals.IMG 20240906 WA0061

According to him, the new additions include crocodiles from the Lake Chad basin, warthogs, cats, jackals, and beacons.

“This move is aimed at promoting gene pool breeding and conservation efforts”

Conservator Kura pointed out that KAZOWMA has also reviewed the feeding protocol for the animals to ensure their needs are met.

The managing director explained that, the agency has procured motorcycles for Falgore game rangers to monitor forest activities and prevent illegal hunting, tree felling, and security breaches.

He said, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has recognized the Kano Zoological Garden as a wild animal rescue center.IMG 20240906 WA0062

“ This designation will enable the garden to receive and care for rescued animals from airports, seaports, and motor parks before releasing them back into their natural habitats”

Conservator Kura highlighted that, to ensure safety and security, KAZOWMA has put measures in place to protect the zoo and Falgore game reserve, particularly during the Sallah festivities.

He stressed that, the agency has also celebrated Game Ranger Day for the first time in Kano and is planning another festival in a secure and protected manner.

The managing director noted that, the Kano house of assembly has repealed the 1976 Wildlife Law and is awaiting the governor’s consent.

“The new law provides for imprisonment for attacking game rangers, wild animals, or felling trees”

Conservator Kura commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his support in elevating KAZOWMA to international standards.
