The Kano State Government KNSG has clarified that its ongoing payroll verification exercise aims to sanitize the civil service, not witch-hunt or victimize individuals
The secretary to the state government Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim made the clarification while briefing newsmen in Kano.

According to him, the government discovered irregularities in its payroll system.
He stated that, 240 employees are receiving double payments, while 217 others share the same Bank Verification Number (BVN).
The SSG noted that, over one thousand eployees have not reported for biometric verification for over six months, raising concerns about the authenticity of their employment status.
“The government plans to conduct a paper rate verification before paying April salaries to eliminate ghost workers and ensure that only legitimate employees receive payment”

In addition to payroll irregularities, the government is also concerned about the high number of civil servants indebted to private loan vendors.
He said over N19 billion is disbursed monthly to service loans owed by 21,000 workers, mostly teachers, with some employees reportedly receiving as little as N500 after loan deductions.
The government has vowed to take disciplinary action against those found culpable and is working to sanitize the state civil service.
