A coalition of women’s organizations in Kano State has intensified calls for the urgent passage of the proposed Special Seats Bill aimed at increasing women’s representation in both State and National Assemblies.
The delegation, led by Hajiya Salma Ahmad Danbaffa of FIDA Kano, undertook a strategic advocacy visit to key federal lawmakers representing constituencies in the state.
Among those visited were Ali Sani Madakin Gini, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, and Tijjani Abdulkadir Jobe.
The groups—comprising representatives from FIDA, National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, AWITA, Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria, WAWICAN, NILOWV, as well as women aspirants and other stakeholders—emphasized the urgent need for inclusive governance through the creation of additional legislative seats for women.
Speaking during the visit, members of the delegation urged the lawmakers to expedite the passage of the bill, stressing that women remain the backbone of society and play vital roles, particularly during electoral processes. They noted that increased representation would enhance democratic development and promote more balanced and inclusive policymaking.
Prominent voices at the advocacy meetings included Sayyida Bahijja Malam Kabara, Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists Kano State Chapter; Hajiya Hauwa, Managing Director of ARTV Kano; Hajiya Gambo; and Malama Habiba of Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria. They all underscored the importance of empowering women politically and amplifying their voices in governance.
The delegation reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy until the Special Seats Bill is passed, expressing optimism that lawmakers will support what they described as a historic step toward gender inclusion and national development.
