Kano State Takes Bold Step with New Climate Change Policy
In a communique signed by the executive director of Fiscal Discipline and Development Advocacy Center FIDAC, Dr Abdulsalam Muhammad Kani, and the state team lead Partnership For Agile Governance and Climate Engagement PACE Malam, Auwalu Hamza.
The workshop tagged Green Budgeting and Financing Climate Action in Kano state was attended by participants from state ministries of environment and climate change, planning and budget.

The workshop, which brought together civil society organisations (CSOs), media, academia, private sector, traditional, and religious leaders, made several key recommendations, including:
Establishment of Climate Change Clubs: To raise awareness and educate the younger generation about climate action.
Tracking of Ecological Funds: To ensure transparency and accountability in the government’s utilisation of these funds.
Step-down Training: For Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) on green budgeting and financing climate action.

Capacity Building: For CSOs on resource mobilisation to champion green budgeting and financing climate action.
Sustainability of Tree Plantation: Across the 44 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kano State.
Community-Driven Plan: To mitigate and adapt to climate change issues.
Collaboration: Between government agencies, CSOs, and the media to promote green budgeting and financing climate action.
Formation of a Coalition: To harmonise stakeholders working on climate change under one umbrella.
Emphasis on Sustainability and Community Engagement
The workshop emphasised the need for sustainability of tree plantation exercises and community-driven plans to mitigate and adapt to climate change issues.
It also stressed the importance of collaboration between government agencies, CSOs, and the media to promote green budgeting and financing climate action.

The validated Action Points from the workshop will be instrumental in ensuring the mitigation of climate change effects in Kano State.
