The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University has ratified the appointments of Professors Rosemary Kanene Udeozor and Muhammad Umar Ndagi as Deputy Vice-Chancellors for Academic and Administration.
The Council, chaired by Olanrewaju Tejuoso, approved the appointments at its 82nd Extraordinary Meeting held on Friday, February 13, 2026, at the university’s main campus.
Professor Udeozor, a specialist in Educational Administration and Planning from the Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education, was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), while Professor Ndagi, a professor of Arabic linguistics from the Department of Arabic, was named Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration).
The appointments followed their earlier emergence unopposed during the university’s 93rd Extraordinary Senate Meeting held on February 11, 2026, upon the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor, Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi.
According to the Council, the appointments took effect from February 13, 2026, and will run for a two-year term in line with the university’s governing regulations.
In their acceptance remarks, Professors Udeozor and Ndagi expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to support the university’s leadership in advancing its academic and administrative goals.
They also assured of their commitment to fostering a peaceful, productive, and progressive academic environment.
Professor Udeozor holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education, Master’s degree in Education, and a PhD from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She joined the institution in 1995 and rose to the rank of professor in 2009.
She has served in several key leadership roles, including Director of the General Studies Unit, Deputy Director of the Centre for Distance Learning, and Postgraduate Programme Coordinator.
She is also a member of the Nigerian Academy of Education and the Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration and Planning.
Professor Ndagi holds a Bachelor of Education and a PhD in Arabic from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, as well as a Master’s degree from the International Institute for Arabic Language in Khartoum, Sudan.
With more than 45 years of teaching experience and over two decades in academic administration, he has served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Deputy Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, and chaired several university committees.
He is also a Fellow of Arabic Studies in Nigeria and has contributed significantly to research and policy development in language and education.
In a related development, the Governing Council also approved the extension of the appointment of Malam Sambo Mohammed as Acting Registrar of the university.
The decision was taken at the Council’s 81st Extraordinary Meeting held on February 5, 2026. Mohammed, who was initially appointed Acting Registrar on November 11, 2025, for a three-month term, will now continue in the role pending the appointment of a substantive registrar.
The appointments and extension underscore the Council’s commitment to strengthening the university’s leadership and ensuring continuity in its administrative operations.
