Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the media, describing journalists as “the conscience of society” and a vital pillar of democracy.

The governor made the remarks during the opening of the 2025 Retreat of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), held in Kaduna.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim.

Governor Yusuf commended the Chapel for hosting its first retreat outside Kano, noting that such gatherings are essential for professional reflection, dialogue, and capacity-building.

He said the theme of the retreat
“Emerging Trends in Journalism: Impacts of AI, News Sources, and Digitally Driven Newsrooms; Tasks Ahead of Journalists” highlights the evolving nature of the media profession.

He expressed confidence that the various papers presented, including sessions on mental health, legal issues, and relationships between the media and government, were “judiciously utilised” to equip participants with modern knowledge.

The governor praised journalists in Kano for their responsible reporting, especially on the state government’s development programs, despite what he described as a challenging political environment.

He attributed this to the cordial relationship his administration has maintained with the media.

Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency, openness, and accountability, stating that an informed citizenry remains the foundation of good governance.

He emphasised the state’s open-door policy, which ensures the media has access to accurate and timely information.

He further pledged continued government support to the Chapel under the leadership of Comrade Murtala Adewale.

He highlighted recent interventions, including the approval of a seed fund for the Chapel’s Cooperative Society and support for organising the retreat.

“The government will not relent in supporting your welfare and providing the needed tools to make your work easier and more productive,” he assured.

Governor Yusuf congratulated the Chapel for its foresight in organising the retreat.
