Former NBA star and influential Nigerian basketball figure, Olumide Oyedeji, has hailed the Lagos Legends for their dramatic 74–72 victory over Rivers Hoopers, a win that secured the team its first-ever NBBF Premier League title and qualification for the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL).
Oyedeji, who owns Hoops N’ Read and serves on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), described the victory as a significant milestone for the domestic league. He said the Legends’ success demonstrates that Nigerian clubs can reach continental standards through effective planning and discipline.
He urged the newly crowned champions to begin early preparation ahead of their BAL debut, noting that the continental stage demands heightened competitiveness and organisation.
Although Hoops N’ Read did not progress beyond the Final Eight this season, Oyedeji reaffirmed his commitment to the growth of the league. His continuous presence, mentorship, and contribution to player development have positioned him as one of the most influential voices shaping Nigerian basketball.
Despite the recent loss of his mother, Oyedeji has maintained active involvement in the sport, a commitment many within the basketball community have described as exemplary.
He also commended Rivers Hoopers for hosting the Final Four for the third consecutive year, praising their organisation and hospitality. The KingsMen narrowly missed out on reclaiming the title despite the strong backing of their home fans.
Oyedeji encouraged the runners-up to remain resilient, saying they put up a commendable effort.
The former D’Tigers captain noted that the competitiveness displayed in this year’s campaign is a sign of progress for the NBBF Premier League, which he believes is becoming more professional and exciting.
