The Chairman of the AMG Foundation, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, has hosted the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Kano State Chapter, alongside executives of women-led and humanitarian organizations at an Iftar gathering to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day.

The event brought together female medical professionals and civil society actors to reflect on the challenges facing women in the medical profession and explore collaborative solutions to strengthen support systems for female doctors in Kano State.

During the gathering, the MWAN delegation, led by its Chairperson, Dr. Safiyya Gambo, highlighted several challenges confronting female doctors in their workplaces.

Ramadan and Lent: A Shared Lesson for Nigerian Muslims and Christians on Faith and Unity

These include harassment while on duty, poor welfare conditions, lack of common rooms where doctors can rest during or after demanding work schedules, and the absence of a permanent secretariat for the association.

Responding to the concerns raised, Dr. Magashi announced a series of commitments by the AMG Foundation aimed at supporting the association and improving the working environment for female doctors.

    Isa Kaita College

He pledged that the foundation would support MWAN in securing a temporary secretariat as an initial step toward acquiring a permanent office.

He also assured that the foundation would work to facilitate the establishment of common rooms for doctors at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.

Ramadan Fasting: Jigawa Adjusts Working Hours for Civil Servants

Dr. Magashi further pledged to provide technical support to strengthen the capacity of MWAN members and to mobilize partner civil society organizations to intensify advocacy for safer working conditions and stronger legal protections for female doctors.

According to him, partner organizations including the Community Health and Research Initiative (CHR), Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS), Women Partners for Progress (WPP), White Heart Development Initiative (WHDI), Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI), and Save a Life Cancer Support Network (SALCASUN) will collaborate to advance advocacy for the full implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act.

He added that the coalition will also conduct public awareness campaigns aimed at promoting respect, protection, and recognition for female doctors who serve under challenging conditions.

Dr. Magashi also noted that efforts would be made to support MWAN in strengthening collaboration with security agencies to ensure the safety of both patients and female healthcare workers within medical facilities.

Organizations represented at the Iftar gathering included White Heart Development Initiative (WHDI), Women Partners for Progress (WPP), Save a Life Cancer Support Network (SALCASUN), Kakaki Human Rights Humanitarian Advocacy Center, and Vulnerable People Support and Development Initiative (V-PeSDI).

The event formed part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, which celebrates the achievements of women while advocating for greater gender equality and improved opportunities across sectors.
