Northwest University Kano has successfully concluded its 2026 Students’ Union Government (SUG) elections, producing a new set of student leaders following a closely contested online voting exercise.
The election, witnessed active participation from students across the university’s campuses. Voting was conducted through a dedicated electronic platform, with results made accessible through an official online link to ensure transparency and credibility.
At the end of the keenly contested poll, Abduljalil Abdullahi Uba, popularly known as Ababuba, emerged as the new SUG President after securing 556 votes. He narrowly defeated his opponent, Ibrahim Salisu Kabara (MK), who polled 555 votes, with the final outcome decided by a single vote.
Other elected SUG officials include Sulaiman Auwal, who won the position of Vice President I with 821 votes, and Hafsat Yusuf Idris, elected Vice President II with 872 votes. Aisha Abdullahi emerged as Secretary General with 952 votes, while Diyya’udin Muhammad Idris secured the position of Assistant Secretary General with 931 votes.
Similarly, Sadiq Ibrahim Sulaiman was elected Financial Secretary with 377 votes, Fiddausi Datti Usman emerged as Food Director with 854 votes, and Umar Salisu Suraj won the position of Public Relations Officer I with 858 votes.
The university had earlier conducted elections for the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS) on Saturday, February 14, 2026. In that election, Faruk Yau, popularly known as Hamdala, emerged as President after securing 900 votes, while Abdulazeez Tukur was elected Secretary General with 835 votes. Other positions in the association were returned unopposed.
Speaking after returning from an official assignment, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, commended students for their peaceful participation and adherence to democratic values. She emphasized that the institution places equal importance on character and academic excellence, urging students to remain law-abiding and responsible.
Professor Bayero also disclosed that the university management would investigate reported incidents that occurred following the NAKSS election results, assuring that anyone found culpable would face disciplinary action in line with the institution’s regulations.
Students across the university expressed satisfaction with the conduct of both elections, describing the process as transparent and reflective of the institution’s commitment to democratic leadership and student inclusion.
