The Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club (TYB-IGRCC), Abuja, was a hive of activity as golfers converged for the end-of-tenure kitty held in honour of its immediate past captain, Maj.-Gen. S.S. Jiya.
The competition, which attracted a large turnout of club members, featured keenly contested rounds as players battled for honours under challenging course conditions that tested skill, patience, and tactical judgment. With scores tightly contested, every stroke proved crucial as the event progressed.
At the end of play, Engr. John Uche emerged the overall winner. Playing off handicap 15, he recorded a gross score of 74 and an impressive net score of 59 to clinch the end-of-tenure kitty title.
Following the tournament, members gathered at the clubhouse for celebrations marked by camaraderie and reflection on the season. A dinner and awards ceremony later followed, during which tributes were paid to Maj.-Gen. Jiya for his leadership and contributions to the growth of the club.
The new club captain, Brig.-Gen. Nicholas Ashinze, described the event as both symbolic and unifying, noting that it reflected the strong bond among members and the solid foundation laid by the outgoing captain. He assured members of continuity, discipline, and steady progress under his leadership.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Umelo, commended Maj.-Gen. Jiya for steering the club through a challenging period marked by increased membership following the temporary closure of the IBB Golf Club. He noted that the successful hosting of the event underscored the unity and resilience of TYB-IGRCC members.
The Chief Executive Officer of BON Sports and club member, Ngozi Bose Onwuegbu, described Jiya’s tenure as inclusive and visionary, stating that his administration strengthened the club’s structures and ensured that members felt valued and heard.
In his response, Maj.-Gen. Jiya expressed gratitude to the executive committee and members for the honour accorded him. He urged continued unity, commitment, and mentorship of younger golfers to sustain the club’s growth and preserve its core values.
The evening climaxed with a lively performance by renowned music icon, 2Face Idibia, who entertained guests and brought the celebrations to a memorable close.
