Young Nigerian content creators have showcased their creativity and commitment to promoting responsible digital engagement and combating misinformation following a series of training programmes held across the country.
The initiative, organised through the Foreign Information and Assistance Programme (FIAP), brought together Gen Z influencers and content creators in Kano, Enugu and Lagos for training on information integrity, responsible online engagement, and strategies for countering mis- and disinformation.
The impact of the programme was recently showcased at a creative exhibition featuring works produced by the participants after completing the training.
The exhibition was attended by Denmark’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens Ole Bach Hansen, alongside FIAP Senior Programme Manager, Hilda Ayejimiwo, and Communications Officer, Anna Chigozie.
The exhibition featured a wide range of creative works, including spoken-word performances, articles, artwork, music, digital campaigns and fact-checking web platforms.
The organisers said the works demonstrated not only the creativity of the young participants but also their commitment to encouraging responsible use of social media among their peers.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the spread of mis- and disinformation online, particularly during sensitive periods such as elections.
Denmark recently joined the European Union in Nigeria’s Support to ECOWAS-CEDEAO in Peace, Security and Governance (EPSG) Project, with a particular focus on tackling electoral mis- and disinformation and supporting credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes in Nigeria, Benin and The Gambia.
Speaking on the initiative, Denmark emphasised the importance of information integrity to resilient democratic societies, noting that young people have a critical role to play because they are not only consumers of information but also creators and distributors who shape public conversations online.
The programme encouraged young content creators to adopt a simple principle before sharing information online: “Think. Check. Then post.”
The organisers urged social media users, particularly young people, to verify information before sharing it and to contribute to a healthier and more responsible digital environment.
The exhibition also provided an opportunity for participants to demonstrate how creative expression, technology and responsible communication can be combined to address the growing challenge of misinformation.
The organisers reaffirmed the importance of continued investment in young people’s digital literacy and information integrity skills as Nigeria works towards strengthening democratic participation and responsible online engagement.
