The House of Representatives has announced the death of one of its members, Rep. Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, describing his passing as a profound loss to the legislature and the nation.
Rep. Hassan, who represented the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, died on Friday evening, April 10, 2026, in Abuja after a period of illness. He was 66 years old.
Until his death, he served as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary and was elected into the National Assembly in 2023 under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the Green Chamber paid glowing tribute to the late lawmaker, highlighting his decades-long contributions to legislative development and constitutional processes in Nigeria.
The statement noted that Hassan was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost legislative counsel and legal draftsmen, with many laws enacted over the years bearing his imprint.
Before venturing into partisan politics, Hassan had a distinguished career within the National Assembly bureaucracy, where he rose through the ranks to become a Permanent Secretary. His vast experience in governance and deep institutional knowledge were said to have significantly enriched legislative work and national discourse.
“As Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, he made valuable contributions toward strengthening Nigeria’s justice system and upholding the rule of law,” the statement said.
Beyond the judiciary committee, the late lawmaker also served on several key committees, including Public Petitions, Aviation, Solid Minerals, Constitution Review, and Treaties, Protocols and Agreements, where he contributed to oversight functions and policy formulation.
The House described him as a diligent, calm, and professional legislator, known for his humility and commitment to consensus-building.
The Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, extended condolences on behalf of the lawmakers to Hassan’s family, constituents, the government and people of Kano State, as well as his colleagues and associates.
He will be buried later on Saturday in accordance with Islamic rites, with further details to be announced.
