The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, has ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano.
This decision is part of a broader initiative aimed at decongesting custodial facilities within the state. The release was primarily based on two significant factors: the health conditions of the inmates and their prolonged detention without trial.
Many of the released inmates were reported to be suffering from deteriorating health conditions. The Chief Judge emphasized that some had fallen ill while in custody and had not received adequate medical attention, leading to their weakened states.

Another critical reason for their release was that these inmates had been held for an extended period without undergoing trial or having their cases addressed legally. This situation raises concerns about justice and human rights, as prolonged detention without trial can be seen as a violation of legal standards.
During the release event, Justice Abdu-Aboki urged the freed inmates to maintain good behavior and avoid any actions that could lead them back into criminal activities. To assist with their reintegration into society, each released inmate was given N10,000 for transportation purposes.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Mr. Ado Inuwa, commended this gesture by the Chief Judge, highlighting its importance in addressing both health issues among inmates and ensuring that those who have been unjustly detained are given a chance at rehabilitation.
The CJ’s action reflects a commitment to improving conditions within Nigeria’s correctional system while also addressing individual health needs and legal rights.
