The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs (FMWA) has refuted allegations that it has abandoned survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) under its care.

The Ministry emphasized that state governments are responsible for managing SGBV shelters and survivor support systems through their respective State Ministries of Women Affairs.
The statement explained that,the FMWA operates only one temporary shelter in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for urgent, high-risk cases requiring immediate federal intervention.

According to Dr Maryam, in 2024, the FMWA conducted a nationwide needs assessment to identify gaps in survivor services.
“This assessment informed targeted interventions, ensuring resources were allocated where needed most. The Ministry has taken the following steps”
Direct Shelter Interventions: Provided psychosocial counseling, stipends, food supplies, and hygiene kits to survivors.

Follow-Up and Extended Support: Secured temporary accommodation, increased financial support, and designed tailored rehabilitation plans for vulnerable survivors.

Systemic Strengthening and Policy Reforms: Finalized a National Action Plan on SGBV, partnered with experts to standardize shelter operations, and expanded federal shelter capacity.
