Despite warnings from the police not to proceed with the protest, the protesters insisted on their right to assemble. “Nobody can tell us where not to gather, we are Rivers people,” some of the young demonstrators told the officers.
The situation escalated as police chased the protesters from the venue, using force to disperse the crowd. Some of the protesters, including journalists covering the event, were reportedly beaten during the crackdown.
