The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to begin searching for the new moon of Sha’aban 1447AH on Monday, the 29th of Rajab, corresponding to January 19, 2026.
The call was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council Sokoto, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu.
Sultan of Sokoto Calls for Ramadan Moon Sighting
The statement advised that if the moon is sighted, the information should be promptly forwarded to the nearest village or district head for onward communication to the Sultan.
It further explained that the monthly observation of the moon helps to properly determine the Islamic calendar within the year, adding that this process makes the eventual sighting of the Ramadan moon more credible and acceptable to Muslims nationwide.

The Sultan therefore urged all Muslims to participate actively in the exercise as part of their religious duty.
