Amnesty International has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the alleged extrajudicial execution of two individuals by its personnel, Ajayi Abayomi, in Karmajiji community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident occurred on January 19, 2026.
The first victim, Musa Adamu, reportedly died a few hours after the incident, while the second victim, Mallam Suleiman Salisu, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.
Amnesty International described the incident as a “gross violation of human rights” and urged that the suspect be held accountable through a fair trial.
The organization warned that such acts, if unchecked, create a climate of fear and undermine public trust in security agencies.
The human rights group noted that security personnel, whose primary mandate is to protect citizens, have in some cases been involved in unlawful use of firearms, abuse of power, and even civil disputes.
Amnesty International cited a similar incident on September 7, 2023, when a DSS operative allegedly shot and killed a fashion designer at Garki International Market following a dispute related to the designer’s work.
The organization stressed that DSS operatives, while tasked with ensuring law and order, should not be involved in civil matters, business disputes, or non-criminal investigations that could lead to abuse or torture.
Amnesty International called for urgent reforms to prevent such incidents and protect citizens’ rights.
