The Kano State Government KNSG has directed all local government councils in the state to strictly adhere to financial regulations and maintain proper bookkeeping practices to promote transparency, accountability, and good governance.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Tajo Othman, gave the directive at the close of a four-day seminar on the Practical Perspective of Bookkeeping and Accounts at the Local Government Level in Kano State.
The seminar was organised by the Ministry in collaboration with Darma Global Ventures and held at ABU Hotels, Kongo, Zaria.
Othman said the initiative was aimed at strengthening financial discipline at the local government level, noting that meticulous record keeping and prudent financial management were essential for effective governance and service delivery.
According to him, the programme is expected to enhance financial management practices, reduce corruption, and improve the accuracy of financial records, thereby supporting data-driven decision-making and accountability in local government administration.
The commissioner identified non-compliance with due process and poor financial documentation as major concerns frequently raised by anti-corruption agencies, stressing the need for strict observance of established financial guidelines.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to continuous capacity building for local government treasury staff, describing them as central to effective public fund management in line with global best practices and international standards.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajiya Fatima Adamu Barde, said the workshop was designed to equip participants with practical skills in accurate record keeping, preparation of financial reports, and effective management of public funds in compliance with relevant laws and financial frameworks.
She commended Darma Global Ventures for partnering with the Ministry to organise the seminar and urged participants to apply the knowledge gained and share best practices in their respective councils.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of Darma Global Ventures, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya Darma, expressed appreciation to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Ministry’s management for the confidence reposed in the firm to organise the seminar, which he said would have a lasting impact on financial management across the state.
Participants at the seminar were drawn from all 44 local government areas of Kano State and included treasurers, deputy treasurers, internal auditors, revenue officers, cashiers, and accountants.
