In a bold step to strengthen Kano State’s public health system, the Kano State Centre for Disease Control (KNCDC) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Kano Independent Research Centre Trust (KIRCT), one of West Africa’s leading research institutions.

A high-powered delegation from KNCDC, led by its Director General, Prof. Muhammad A. Abbas, paid a working visit to KIRCT’s state-of-the-art facility in Kwanar Dawaki. The team comprised senior officials from public health, laboratory services, emergency preparedness, epidemiology, and research.

During the visit, KNCDC held high-level discussions with KIRCT Director General, Prof. Hamisu Salihu, and his management team.

The deliberations focused on strengthening collaboration in disease surveillance, cutting-edge biomedical research, capacity building, and joint public health interventions.

KIRCT—an independent institution co-established by the Kano State Government and Pfizer Inc.—has been at the forefront of scientific research in molecular biology, genomics, and diagnostics of high-priority infectious diseases.

It also plays a key role in training health professionals across the sub-region.

Prof. Abbas emphasized the significance of research-driven strategies in tackling emerging public health threats.

“Our partnership with KIRCT represents a major milestone in our efforts to strengthen disease detection, preparedness, and response mechanisms in Kano State,” he stated.

The collaboration aims to leverage KIRCT’s advanced facilities and technical expertise to support KNCDC’s mandate in disease prevention and control.

Both institutions are committed to adopting evidence-based approaches that could influence state, national, and regional health policies.

As the partnership evolves, it is expected to have a transformational impact on the state’s healthcare system and significantly improve health outcomes for the people of Kano.
