The Kano Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old woman, Maryam Usman, for allegedly setting her co-wife’s room ablaze in Mangwarori Quarters, Mariri area of the State.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident occurred in the early hours of May 12, 2026.
The statement said the Command received a distress report at about 12:40 a.m. alleging that the suspect set fire to the room occupied by her co-wife, Firdausi Saminu, aged 40.
As a result of the fire incident, four persons sustained varying degrees of burns, including Firdausi Saminu, two children identified as Isma’il Saminu, aged three, and Khadija Saminu, aged five, as well as the husband, Saminu Miko.
Police authorities said the victims were immediately evacuated to Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
The statement further disclosed that patrol teams swiftly responded to the scene and arrested the suspect, who is currently being held at the Mariri Police Division.
According to the Command, exhibits linked to the incident have been recovered while investigations are ongoing.
The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Bompai, for further investigation and possible prosecution on charges bordering on mischief by fire and attempted culpable homicide.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, condemned the act, describing it as criminal, inhuman and unacceptable.
He directed that the investigation be handled professionally and speedily to ensure justice for the victims.
The Police Commissioner also wished the injured persons quick recovery and assured them of protection and support throughout the legal process.
The Command advised members of the public to resolve domestic disputes peacefully through dialogue and lawful channels, warning against violence, revenge and arson.
Residents were also urged to report early signs of domestic conflict to security agencies and community leaders before situations escalate into violence.
