The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has hosted a team from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) at its corporate headquarters in Abuja as part of a study examining sustainable revenue and fee models for African National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs).
The study was commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to generate insights into financial sustainability strategies that can support the evolving mandates and regulatory responsibilities of NRAs across Africa.

During an opening meeting with NAFDAC Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, discussions focused on the Agency’s existing revenue structure, cost base, regulatory activities and fee model.
The engagement also considered NAFDAC’s future financial requirements and priorities as the Agency continues to expand and strengthen its regulatory functions.

The four-day assessment will involve technical sessions with key NAFDAC directorates and departments, including finance, registration, inspectorate, post-market surveillance, laboratories, ports and border operations, human resources, information technology, digital services and artificial intelligence capabilities.
Other areas of regulatory operations will also be reviewed as part of the comprehensive assessment.

The study is expected to provide NAFDAC with a tailored assessment of its revenue, costs and fee model, while supporting the Agency’s long-term planning for financial sustainability.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the capacity of African regulatory authorities to sustainably finance their operations and respond effectively to emerging public health and regulatory demands.
