The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has attributed former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s survival in a fatal car accident to divine mercy.
Pastor Adeboye made the remark on Sunday during the church’s monthly thanksgiving service, while teaching on the theme of God’s mercy and preservation.
According to reports, Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway last Monday. The crash claimed the lives of two of his close associates, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele. Joshua, however, sustained only minor injuries.
Tribune Online reports that the 36-year-old boxer was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve and returned to the United Kingdom on Saturday.
While addressing the congregation, Pastor Adeboye referenced the biblical passage Lamentations 3:22–23, emphasizing that survival in life-threatening situations is a result of God’s mercy rather than human wisdom.
“It is by the mercies of the Lord that we are not consumed. We are alive because of the mercies of God, not because of cleverness,” he said.
The RCCG leader further referred to reports indicating that Joshua had exchanged seats with another person shortly before the accident occurred.
“I read in the newspapers yesterday that our boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, exchanged seats with someone before the accident,” Adeboye stated. “The people he exchanged seats with died. I don’t know why, but the mercy of God said someone would still be alive today.”
The incident has continued to generate reactions across the country, with many expressing gratitude for Joshua’s survival and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
