FCDO through the Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria PLANE, in collaboration with the Kano State Government KNSG, has organised a high-level roundtable discussion among key stakeholders to formulate partnership guidelines aimed at improving education in Kano State.
The engagement, held in Kano, brought together key stakeholders from the State Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Kano State Agency for Mass Education (SAME), School-Based Management Committees (SBMC), Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA), Association of Private School Owners of Nigeria (APSON), civil society groups, and other relevant organisations.
Speaking at the event, PLANE Kano Team Lead, Malam Umar Lawan, said the Edu Hub concept was developed in August 2025 to address existing gaps in the education sector and improve coordination among stakeholders.
He explained that PLANE conducted a two-day readiness assessment involving key stakeholders, during which a consultant worked closely with SUBEB to identify critical gaps affecting education service delivery.
“We organised a two-day readiness assessment with stakeholders and engaged a consultant who worked with SUBEB to identify the gaps. The readiness assessment will guide interventions to ensure Kano addresses those gaps effectively,” Lawan said.
He added that PLANE had also convened accountants and heads of personnel from the 44 local government areas to align their budgeting processes with the National Chart of Accounts, which he described as one of the key priorities of the Edu Hub initiative.
“I want to assure you that the budgets of local governments this year are in line with the National Chart of Accounts, which is one of the priority areas of the hub,” he added.
Also speaking, the executive Secretary of the Kano State Agency for Mass Education SAME, Dr. Binta Abubakar, described the Edu Hub as a strategic intervention aimed at uplifelevatingstate’s education sector to global standards.
She expressed optimism that Kano State would meet all requirements set by the World Bank to fully access and benefit from the initiative.
“The Edu Hub is an important intervention that will uplift education to global standards. Kano State is committed to fulfilling all the conditions, including strengthening synergy among stakeholders,”
In his remarks, a representative of the School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) said the engagement had enlightened participants on the importance of collaboration among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), civil society organisations, and other education stakeholders.
He noted that improved collaboration would contribute significantly to enhancing education outcomes across the 44 local government areas of the state.
Similarly, APSON General Secretary in Kano State, Hussaini Yunusa, said private schools were complementing government efforts to provide quality education and reduce pressure on public schools.
He disclosed that APSON members were also helping to reduce the number of out-of-school children by offering scholarships, particularly to orphans and vulnerable children within their communities.
A representative of High-Level Women in Advocacy (HILWA), Hajiya Ladidi Fagge, described the roundtable as a preliminary engagement that would pave the way for stronger partnerships among stakeholders.
She emphasised the need for sustained collaboration to improve teaching and learning outcomes, infrastructure, and access to educational materials across the state.
The Edu Hub initiative is expected to strengthen coordination, improve accountability, and enhance resource utilisation within Kano State’s education system, ultimately expanding access to quality education across the state.
