The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kebbi State chapter, has dismissed claims by former Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, AbdulWaheed Ibrahim Umar, that the media has underreported the achievements of the Kebbi people and the state government.
In a statement issued to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi, NUJ Kebbi Chairman Alhaji Kabiru Wurma described Umar’s remarks as misleading and suggested they were intended to impress Governor Nasir Idris during his address at the NLC retreat in the state.
“We were taken aback when Comrade Umar, while at the Presidential Lodge, claimed to have toured the state to verify Governor Idris’ achievements within barely three years,” Wurma said.
The NUJ chairman further highlighted the extensive media coverage the governor has received, noting, “No other governor in Nigeria has enjoyed such consistent reportage from journalists and media organizations as Governor Nasir Idris.”
Wurma also recalled a visit to Kebbi on 23 October 2024, when the current NLC President, Joe Ajero, commended the state government, stating, “There is not a day when positive stories are not coming out of Kebbi State.”
The NUJ chairman questioned why Umar would make claims about matters he had little knowledge of, stressing that every major government project in the state had been covered by journalists.
The Correspondents’ Chapel urged that accurate and fair reporting should guide public discourse rather than unverified claims about media coverage.
