The Federal Government is strengthening the autonomy and effectiveness of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, NMEC, as part of efforts to eradicate illiteracy and expand access to inclusive lifelong learning across Nigeria.
The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, disclosed this while outlining government initiatives to mark International Literacy Day 2026.

She said greater autonomy for NMEC would enhance planning, coordination, implementation and accountability in mass literacy programmes across the country.
Professor Suwaiba directed the activation of Community Learning Centres nationwide to expand access to literacy and non-formal education, particularly in underserved communities.
The Minister said the Federal Government is also supporting the rehabilitation of the National Centre for Adult Education in Kano, infrastructure development and efforts to provide a permanent headquarters for NMEC.

She added that the Commission’s Kano regional office is being developed into a Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, centre to provide practical skills alongside literacy education.
Professor Suwaiba also stressed the importance of digital inclusion, teacher development and regular monitoring of literacy programmes to ensure improved learning outcomes.
She called for updated national literacy data to guide effective planning and urged NMEC to strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders and increase public awareness of its programmes.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate International Literacy Day 2026, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind in access to literacy and lifelong learning.
The 2026 International Literacy Day is being observed under the theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”
