The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who reportedly died after being shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
The University announced his death in a statement signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
According to the statement, Marafa was a dedicated and committed staff member who served the University meritoriously and held various positions of responsibility during his career.
He was appointed Bursar of NOUN in September 2022, where he was described as having demonstrated a strong sense of duty and commitment to the advancement of the institution.
The University described his death as a profound loss to the entire NOUN community, mourning him as a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the University family.
NOUN extended its condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others affected by the loss, while praying to Almighty Allah to grant them the strength to bear the tragedy.
The University said details of the burial arrangements would be communicated once released by the family.
It prayed that Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
