Lionel Messi scored twice to become the all-time leading goalscorer in the Leagues Cup as Inter Miami came from behind to defeat Mexican side Atlético San Luis 4-2 in their opening match of the 2026 tournament.
The Argentine superstar now has 14 Leagues Cup goals, the most in the competition’s history.
Atlético San Luis took an early lead through David Rodríguez, but Messi responded with a quick equaliser before adding his second goal later in the first half. Telasco Segovia and Micael also got on the scoresheet as Inter Miami produced an impressive attacking display to seal all three points in front of their home fans.
The brace marked Messi’s first goals since returning from the 2026 FIFA World Cup and reinforced his importance to Inter Miami as they begin another quest for Leagues Cup glory. The victory gives the MLS side a strong start to their campaign while extending Messi’s remarkable record in the competition.
