President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described elder statesman and leader of the Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, as a steadfast voice for Nigeria’s unity and the dignity of its citizens.
The President made the remarks on Monday in Akure, Ondo State, during activities marking the 100th birthday celebration of Pa Fasoranti.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu praised the elder statesman for dedicating most of his life to the service of justice, democracy, education and advocacy for the underprivileged.
According to the President, Pa Fasoranti consistently sacrificed personal comfort to defend the oppressed and speak for the under-represented in society.
He noted that in a society where some public office holders prioritise personal interests over public service, leaders like Fasoranti remain exceptional because of their commitment to fairness, justice and national unity.
President Tinubu further described the centenarian as a man of principle who remained steadfast even during difficult political periods when advocating for democracy and justice came with personal risks.
The President also applauded Pa Fasoranti’s lifelong commitment to education, recalling his early years as a teacher and describing him as a teacher whose “classroom now extends to the conscience of the nation.”
During the event, Vice President Kashim Shettima commissioned a landmark flyover project in Akure on behalf of the President.
The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, subsequently named the flyover after Pa Fasoranti in honour of his contributions to society and principled leadership.
Governor Aiyedatiwa described the Afenifere leader as a symbol of integrity and selfless service whose life reflects dedication to truth, justice and responsible leadership.
Also speaking at the occasion, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, presented a tribute on behalf of the people of Ogun State, describing Pa Fasoranti as an iconic Nigerian worthy of celebration.
In his remarks delivered by his younger sister, Olori Rachel Tubosun Falae, Pa Fasoranti expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, governors, traditional rulers, family members and other guests for celebrating with him.
Reflecting on his lifetime experiences, the elder statesman said he had witnessed colonial rule, independence, war, military administration and democracy, adding that faith in God, hard work and service to humanity had sustained him throughout the years.
Pa Fasoranti also urged younger Nigerians to embrace leadership founded on sacrifice, integrity and selfless service to the people.
