The Kano State Police Command has inaugurated an eight-member panel to investigate the recent attack on the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday, July 7, 2025, involved an altercation between supporters of the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, and Emir Sanusi’s loyalists.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, during a courtesy visit by the newly elected executive members of the Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Monday.

CP Bakori said the committee is mandated to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the clash, identify those involved, and recommend necessary actions.

The panel was formally inaugurated on Monday and is expected to submit its findings within seven days.

According to reports, the incident occurred when Emir Bayero’s convoy attempted to pass through the Kofar Kudu area near the Emir’s Palace while returning to the Nassarawa mini palace after a condolence visit to the family of the late business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata. Supporters of Emir Sanusi allegedly blocked the route, leading to a confrontation.

During the altercation, palace guards were reportedly injured, several police vehicles were vandalized, and the main gate of the palace was damaged.

Eyewitnesses said the timely intervention of security operatives averted what could have escalated into a full-blown crisis.

In the aftermath of the violence, the Police Command confirmed the arrest of four suspects. The spokesperson of the Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.

“We have arrested four suspects in connection with the attack, and they are currently being held as part of ongoing investigations,” he said.

Meanwhile, CP Bakori reaffirmed the command’s readiness to maintain law and order and reiterated the importance of accurate, responsible journalism in promoting peace and security.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Mr. Murtala Adewale, said the visit was aimed at strengthening the partnership between journalists and the police in the spirit of mutual cooperation and support for community policing.
