The Director of Distance Learning at Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Muhammad Bashir Mu’azu, has emphasized the need for the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in engineering education, research, and professional practice.
Professor Mu’azu made the call while delivering a keynote lecture at the February General Meeting and launch of the branch calendar of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Zaria Branch, held at the NAERLS New Hall, Samaru campus in Zaria.

He noted that while AI has become an important academic and professional tool, over-dependence on the technology could undermine the technical competence of engineering graduates.
According to him, many students increasingly rely on AI to complete academic tasks, warning that excessive dependence may produce graduates who lack the practical skills required in engineering practice.
Professor Mu’azu, however, described AI as a powerful support tool capable of assisting engineers in complex calculations, system design, technical documentation, and improving workflow efficiency.
He stressed that AI should complement human expertise rather than replace it, urging both educators and students to ensure proper verification of AI-generated outputs and maintain professional and ethical standards.
Earlier, Chairperson of the NSE Zaria Branch, Engr. Maryam Abubakar, said the meeting was aimed at strengthening membership, promoting collaboration, and restoring the branch’s reputation as one of the leading engineering bodies in the country.

She encouraged members to participate actively in branch activities, mentor younger engineers, share professional knowledge, and contribute to community development.
In separate remarks, Engr. Osaze Omorubo and Engr. Agba called on members to take collective responsibility for the growth and sustainability of the society.
The event also featured the celebration of newly inducted fellows, recognition of past chairmen and senior members, and presentation of awards to individuals who made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession.
