The Federal Government has reiterated its determination to end insecurity in Nigeria through proactive security operations, strategic planning and stronger collaboration with state governments.
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, stated this on Monday in Kano during a condolence and assessment visit to the Kano State Government House following the bandit attack on Chiroma Village in Garun Mallam Local Government Area on August 29, 2026.
Dr. Matawalle assured the Kano State Government and residents that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to defeating insecurity and restoring sustainable peace across the country.
The Minister disclosed that the President had constituted a committee to develop a five-year Defence and Security Plan to provide a long-term framework for addressing emerging and existing security threats.
According to him, the plan is expected to strengthen strategic coordination and guide the government’s approach to national defence and security over the coming years.
Dr. Matawalle also disclosed that security forces launched a joint rescue operation following the attack, under the leadership of the Commander, 3 Brigade, Kano, Brigadier General Jimoh.
He said personnel of the Joint Task Force from the Hawan-Kwano and Kwanar Dangora camps participated in the operation, which resulted in the rescue of kidnapped victims around the Yan-Kifi Bridge and Marabar Kwari areas of Garun Mallam Local Government Area.
The Minister commended the troops for their courage and prompt response, assuring that the Federal Government would continue to provide the Armed Forces and other security agencies with the necessary resources to improve their operational capacity.
He called for stronger cooperation among the federal, state and local governments, stressing that tackling insecurity requires a coordinated approach involving all levels of government and the wider society.
Dr. Matawalle also appealed to citizens to provide timely and credible information to security agencies, noting that community intelligence remains important in preventing attacks and protecting vulnerable communities.
He assured Kano State of increased Federal Government support, including the deployment of additional fighting vehicles, weapons and other operational equipment to strengthen security operations across the state.
Earlier, the Minister held a closed-door meeting with commanders of the 3 Brigade and other security formations in Kano, where he charged them to sustain ongoing operations and intensify efforts to protect communities and secure lives and property.
In his remarks, Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, thanked the Minister for the visit and pledged the state government’s continued collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies.
Governor Yusuf said the state remained committed to supporting measures aimed at strengthening security and stability, adding that Kano would continue to work with the Federal Government to prevent insecurity from taking root in the state.
The Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to providing the resources and strategic support required to safeguard lives and property and protect the territorial integrity of Nigeria.
