Bayero University, Kano (BUK) have firmly asserted their dominance on the regional basketball stage, emerging champions of the 3rd edition of the Northwest 3×3 Basketball Championship held from February 4 to 6, 2026, at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
The Kano-based side delivered a flawless campaign, winning all six of their matches to clinch the coveted trophy.
BUK sealed their triumph with a tense 20–18 victory over tournament hosts ABU in the final, showcasing composure and quality under pressure.
BUK set the tone early in the competition with a commanding 10–0 whitewash of Northwest University, Kano. They followed it up with a hard-fought win against ABU, before producing a string of convincing performances.
The champions overwhelmed the Air Force Institute of Technology 33–20, edged the Federal University of Education, Kano 11–9, and closed out the tournament in emphatic fashion with another 10–0 shutout of the Federal University of Transport, Daura.
Reacting to the achievement, BUK Director of Sports, Professor Rabiu Mohammed, praised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Haruna Musa, FSI, for his unwavering support for university sports and the welfare of student-athletes.
He also commended the team for their discipline and outstanding performance throughout the championship.
Team coach, Sunusi Shuaibu, popularly known as Badway, described the victory as a product of hard work, unity and belief, applauding the players’ resilience and fighting spirit.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Sports Consultative Committee, Professor Musa Garba, expressed delight over the victory and congratulated the players for making Bayero University, Kano proud.
