The Gwarzo Local Government Area has launched a comprehensive free eye screening and eye care programme at the Eye Unit of Gwarzo General Hospital, aimed at improving access to quality eye healthcare for residents, especially the elderly and less-privileged.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Chairman of Gwarzo LGA, Dr. Mani Tsoho, in collaboration with Makkah Eye Hospital, has attracted wide public interest and provided relief to hundreds of beneficiaries across the local government.
The programme offers comprehensive eye examinations, free medications, prescription eyeglasses, and free eye surgeries for patients diagnosed as requiring surgical intervention.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Dr. Mani Tsoho, represented by the Head of Medical Services (HOD Medical), Alhaji Sulaiman Abdulqadir Karaye, stressed that good eye health is a critical component of overall wellbeing.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Gwarzo Local Government to implementing people-oriented initiatives, particularly in the health sector, to enhance the quality of life of residents.
The chairman commended Makkah Eye Hospital for the humanitarian partnership, noting that the initiative would significantly reduce the financial burden of medical care on citizens and help prevent avoidable blindness through early detection and appropriate treatment.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude and excitement over the programme, with many describing it as their first experience of receiving professional eye screening and treatment at no cost. Several beneficiaries also offered prayers for the local government leadership for initiating what they described as a compassionate and impactful intervention.
Dr. Tsoho assured residents that the programme would not be a one-off exercise, stating that the local government would continue to partner with private and humanitarian health institutions to ensure sustainable and accessible healthcare services for the people of Gwarzo.
The initiative highlights the local government’s resolve to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and promote preventive medical services at the grassroots level.
