The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the N40 billion allocated to it in the 2025 budget, deeming it insufficient to cover its expenses.

Instead, INEC proposed a budget of N126 billion, which it believes is more suitable to conduct its activities, including off-cycle elections, Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), and replacement of damaged materials .
According to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the N40 billion allocation would not even cover one-third of the commission’s projected expenses.

He noted that personnel costs alone, due to the new minimum wage, would exhaust the N40 billion budgetary envelope.
Yakubu also mentioned that the commission had to seek intervention funds of N10.5 billion for the Edo and Ondo elections in 2024, and another N500 million for bye-elections .

The joint committee on INEC and Electoral Matters, chaired by Senator Sarafadeen Alli, seems to have been convinced by INEC’s proposal.
