Gunmen have killed nine soldiers, one police officer and several civilians in an ambush at Giro Masa community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the incident while speaking to journalists after visiting victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where the injured were receiving treatment.
Describing the attack as barbaric, the governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, particularly among security personnel who were on duty to protect residents of the state.
“This is a sad and unfortunate situation. These are personnel who risk their lives daily to safeguard our communities, yet they have fallen victims in this tragic incident,” he said.
Governor Idris assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of those injured and provide support to the families of the deceased security operatives.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across Kebbi State, stressing that efforts to protect lives and property would be intensified.
The governor offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the victims and comfort for their families.
Following his hospital visit, he proceeded to the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, also saw the assailants set ablaze two military gun trucks, further underscoring the scale of the violence.
