The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to improving the lives of children across the state.
This commitment was reiterated by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, during a two-day capacity-building workshop on Social and Behavioral Change for Child Survival and Development.

Ministry of Women Affairs Collaborates UNICEF on Child Protection
The workshop, organized by the Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), aimed to equip students of Bayero University, Kano, with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive positive change in their communities.
Waiya highlighted the state government’s efforts to enhance girl-child education, including direct cash transfers to schoolgirls, reopening previously closed girls’ boarding schools, and providing renovated school buses to ease transportation challenges.

Additionally, over 700,000 primary school children have received free school uniforms.

The government has also established a high-powered committee to address child street begging and wandering, with 270 children currently under government care receiving rehabilitation and education.
Furthermore, a ₦50,000 monthly family support program has been launched to empower families to prioritize their children’s education and well-being.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of Social and Behavioral Change (SBC) in driving meaningful change and ensuring child survival and development become a shared responsibility.

He urged stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, health professionals, and community leaders, to leverage the insights gained from the workshop to drive positive change in their communities.

In his remarks, the Chief of field office UNICEF Kano,Mr Rahma Rihood Muhammed, reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to advocating for the protection of children’s rights and providing essential services, including education, healthcare, and nutrition.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Bayero University, Kano, Professor Shamsuddeen Umar, thanked the organizers for choosing the university to host the capacity-building workshop and urged students to remain attentive and committed to acquiring knowledge that would benefit their academic and professional growth.
