The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Haruna Musa, has expressed readiness to strengthen collaboration with Khalifa Isyaku Rabiu University (KHAIRUN) to promote science and technology education to international standards.
Professor Musa made this known after the management of KHAIRUN, led by its Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, announced plans to honour him with a colloquium and conference scheduled for August 18 and 19, 2026, at the Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata Auditorium, KHAIRUN.
The BUK Vice Chancellor described the planned honour as a source of motivation, saying it would encourage him to intensify efforts towards improving teaching and learning and expand collaboration with relevant institutions within and outside Nigeria.
He appreciated KHAIRUN for organising the event in his honour as the 12th Vice Chancellor of BUK, describing the initiative as timely and an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss ways of advancing higher education in Kano, northern Nigeria and the country.
Professor Musa said universities in Kano and neighbouring states had long needed a platform where public and private institutions could interact, exchange ideas and jointly develop solutions to challenges confronting higher education.
He expressed the expectation that the communique and recommendations from the colloquium would provide useful direction for improving science and technology education in Nigeria.
Speaking earlier, the Vice Chancellor of KHAIRUN, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, said the decision to organise the colloquium was based on three major objectives, including honouring Professor Musa as the 12th Vice Chancellor of BUK.
He said the event would also provide an opportunity for universities in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states to acknowledge BUK’s contribution to the development of higher education in the region.
According to him, many of the universities in the three states emerged from BUK, which played a significant role in their establishment and development.
Professor Garba added that the colloquium would examine the development and impact of science and technology education, particularly against the background of Professor Musa’s academic background in chemistry and his contributions to the international academic community.
He expressed optimism that the discussions would produce practical recommendations that could be adopted by governments, universities and the private sector to strengthen science and technology education in the country.
Professor Garba also disclosed that a committee comprising experienced members from KHAIRUN and BUK had been constituted to coordinate the event and ensure its success.
The two-day colloquium is expected to bring together researchers, academics and other stakeholders from fields including engineering, information technology, medical sciences and pharmaceutical sciences to deliberate on the future of science and technology education in Nigeria.
