President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for the establishment of community-based security committees across Nigeria as part of efforts to enhance peace, stability, and collaboration in the country.
The President made the call in Birnin Kebbi during the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) General Assembly, held at the Presidential Banquet Hall in the Kebbi State capital.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, President Tinubu said the proposed committees would serve as platforms for dialogue, conflict resolution, and cooperation between communities, traditional rulers, and security agencies.
According to him, the initiative aims to strengthen trust, improve intelligence sharing, and foster peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
“The committees will not only support security agencies but also promote interfaith dialogue, reduce communal tensions, and build trust among religious groups,” he said.
The President also underscored the importance of empowering women and youth through education, entrepreneurship, and leadership training as tools for preventing violent extremism. He added that inclusive decision-making and community participation are essential to achieving sustainable peace.
Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sacrifices in preserving the nation’s peace and unity.
He urged citizens to support security agencies and avoid spreading demoralizing comments on social media, noting that insecurity remains a global challenge that requires collective effort to overcome.
In his remarks, Governor Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu) welcomed delegates to Kebbi and thanked the NTRC for hosting the assembly in the state. He described the theme, “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace in Northern Nigeria,” as timely and significant.
Governor Idris reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting traditional rulers, whom he described as crucial partners in promoting peace, unity, and social cohesion at the grassroots level.
