The National President of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support toward the development of sports across the country.
Dr. Gawuna, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, made the commendation during the opening ceremony of the second edition of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu National Under-18 Boys Football Tournament, held at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
He described sports as a vibrant tool that unites Nigerians and projects the positive image of the country globally, noting that Nigeria is blessed with numerous young, talented, and skillful players who need encouragement and support to thrive both nationally and internationally.
Represented by YSFON’s Vice President (North-West), Alhaji Aminu Ahmad Wali, Dr. Gawuna lauded the Tinubu administration for its tireless commitment to promoting sporting activities and youth development nationwide.
He also urged participating states to give full cooperation to the organizers to ensure the success of the championship, while commending Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, for approving the hosting of the tournament.
He called on other state governments to emulate Katsina’s example by investing in youth and sports initiatives.
Dr. Gawuna further appealed to match officials to uphold fairness and professionalism, avoiding any action that could disrupt the smooth conduct of the competition.
In his remarks, Governor Radda, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Aliyu Lawan Zakari, described the tournament as an avenue for discovering and nurturing young football talents who could represent Nigeria in future national and international competitions.
The governor reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to continue supporting sports development as part of efforts to promote youth engagement and social cohesion.
He also commended President Tinubu for his continued commitment to advancing sports in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, in the opening matches, Kebbi defeated Zamfara 2–0, Katsina thrashed Jigawa 7–2, Gombe edged Kwara 1–0, and Sokoto beat Kaduna 3–1.
The tournament continues today (Wednesday) at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina.
