The Kano State Ministry of Information has convened a high-level strategic meeting with Information Officers from the 44 Local Government Areas and eight Zonal Information Officers across the state, as part of efforts to reposition and strengthen government communication and information dissemination at the grassroots.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters, brought together key stakeholders to chart a coordinated approach to ensuring accurate, timely and responsible information reaches citizens at the community level.
Addressing participants, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the engagement was a deliberate move to enhance the capacity, efficiency and professionalism of Information Officers across the state.
He stressed that effective communication at the grassroots is critical to promoting transparency, public trust and citizen engagement in government activities.
Comrade Waiya outlined the ministry’s 2026 strategic roadmap, which places priority on institutional support for Information Officers to enable them to effectively discharge their duties.
According to him, the plan includes the provision of essential working tools, continuous professional development programmes and opportunities for officers interested in furthering their education in journalism and communication-related fields.
He further disclosed that the ministry has pledged to sponsor and support interested Information Officers to return to school, with the aim of upgrading their skills in line with emerging trends and best practices in modern information management and public communication.
Discussions at the meeting also focused on strengthening collaboration between Local Government Chairmen, Information Officers and the ministry to achieve more efficient and coordinated information management at the grassroots.
In this regard, the commissioner announced plans to reintroduce structured capacity-building programmes on effective social media management, in recognition of its growing role in public communication and engagement.
Comrade Waiya emphasised that the overarching goal of the ministry is to build public trust through credible, transparent and professional communication, ensuring that citizens receive accurate information from reliable and responsible sources.
In their separate remarks, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Usman Bello, the Director of Information, Alhaji Aminu Kabir Yassar, and the Director of Public Enlightenment, Alhaji Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru, expressed strong support for the initiative.
They urged Information Officers to remain committed, proactive and ethical in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Forum of Local Government Information Officers in Kano State, Comrade Sharif Zaharaddeen Usman Kofar Nasarawa, commended the ministry for the initiative, describing it as timely and strategic, and capable of significantly strengthening information flow and public communication at the grassroots.
The meeting was attended by directors and heads of departments of the ministry, Information Officers from the 44 Local Government Areas, as well as the eight Zonal Information Officers in Kano State.
