The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a bill seeking the establishment of the Kano State Economic Council to promote economic planning and development across the state.
The passage followed deliberations on the floor of the House during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jibril Isma’il Falgore.
Speaking to newsmen after the sitting, the Majority Leader of the House and member representing Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini, said the bill empowers the Governor to chair the State Economic Council.
He explained that the council would comprise the Executive Governor as Chairman, the Commissioners responsible for Budget and Planning, Economic Development, Justice and Education, as well as five eminent personalities with relevant expertise to contribute to the economic advancement of the state.
According to him, the council is expected to develop programmes for the economic development of Kano State and coordinate activities of the state and the 44 local government councils towards achieving sustainable economic growth.
Lawan Hussaini added that the chairmen of the local government councils would also form part of the council, while the Ministry responsible for Local Government would provide the secretariat.
In another development, the House adopted a motion calling on the Kano State Government to provide the necessary equipment and facilities for teaching computer science and make the subject a core component of the curriculum in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions across the state.
Moving the motion, the member representing Ghari Tsanyawa Constituency, Garba Ya’u, said computer science had become essential to development in sectors such as health, agriculture and the economy.
He expressed concern that some students face difficulties in examinations, including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, because they lack basic computer knowledge.
The lawmaker stressed that making computer science a core subject would equip students with the skills needed to perform better in examinations and adapt to the demands of the digital age.
The motion received the support of members who described computer literacy as critical to improving education and preparing young people for future opportunities.
Meanwhile, the House received a correspondence from the Executive seeking its approval for the appointment of Bilkisu Abubakar and Auwal Ibrahim as members of the Kano State Judicial Service Commission.
