The Senate on Tuesday recorded significant progress on several legislative proposals as four new bills passed first reading during plenary.
The bills include the Nigeria Police Force Pension Board (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (HB. 979); Cannabis Reclassification Treaty (Ratification and Enforcement) Bill, 2025 (SB. 970); Digital Communication Platforms (Oversight & Regulation) Bill, 2025 (SB. 971); and the Digital Health Essential Services (Designation) Bill, 2025 (SB. 977).
Lawmakers also considered the recall and recommittal of Clauses 4 and 9 of the National Identity Management Commission (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.
Two bills transmitted from the House of Representatives likewise passed third reading. They include the Central Gaming Bill, 2025 (HB 2062) and the Chartered Institute of Capital Market Registrars Bill (HB 1460).
A major highlight of the session was the tribute to renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, whose death sparked an outpouring of respect nationwide.
The motion, sponsored by Senator Shehu Buba (Bauchi South), described him as an erudite scholar, bridge-builder, and humanitarian who touched countless lives across religious and ethnic divides.
Lawmakers prayed for Allah to grant him Aljannatul Firdausi.
