Nigerian conjoined twins, Hassana and Husaina, have returned home to an emotional welcome at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport following a successful separation surgery in Saudi Arabia.
The delicate operation was performed at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, under the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.
Emotional Welcome in Kano as Separated Conjoined Twins Arrive from Saudi
The twins, who traveled to Riyadh in October 2023, underwent months of intensive examinations before doctors confirmed that they were joined at the lower abdomen, pelvis, and spine, sharing critical organs and structures.
A multi-disciplinary team of 38 consultants and specialists, including experts in pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, anaesthesia, and plastic surgery, handled the procedure.
Conducted in nine stages over 14 hours, the surgery required intricate coordination to separate the girls and reconstruct their individual systems.

The successful outcome was hailed as one of the most complex yet rewarding achievements of the Saudi Siamese Twins Separation Program.
Welcoming the family at the airport, the Consul General of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Khalil Ahmed Al-Admawi, praised the medical team’s success as proof of the Kingdom’s dedication to humanitarian service.
He stressed that Saudi Arabia, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, will continue to support countries in need, including Nigeria, with which it shares long-standing ties.
The separation of Hassana and Husaina represents the 65th successful operation carried out under the Saudi Siamese Twins Separation Program, which has provided medical care to 150 sets of conjoined twins from 25 countries over the past 35 years.
The program has become one of the world’s leading humanitarian medical initiatives, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s global expertise in pediatric surgery while offering hope to vulnerable families across continents.
For the twins and their family, the safe return to Nigeria marks not only the end of a difficult journey but also the beginning of a new chapter filled with possibility.
